Amphetamine variants are modifications of restricted amphetamines that are made by "underground" chemist to create street drugs that are not specifically listed as controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration. These drugs are created by changing the molecular structure of an amphetamine to create a new substance. Because unlicensed and untrained amateurs create amphetamine variants in clandestine laboratories, they can be extremely dangerous. In many cases, the variant is more dangerous and more potent than the original drug. Amphetamine variants, commonly referred to as "designer drugs," are often associated with "raves," all-night underground dance parties frequented by teens and college students.
