Methaqualone is a sedative hypnotic drug similar to barbiturates that produces a state similar to alcohol intoxication. It produces similar physical and psychological addiction as well. One of the most potent sedative hypnotic compounds ever produced, methaqualone is no longer available in the United States. Because of its high potential for abuse, the federal government banned its production in 1984.
