Psilocybin, which is chemically related to LSD, is the active ingredient in the Psilocybe mexicana mushroom and some other mushroom species. When ingested, these mushrooms may cause physical and mental relaxation, fatigue, hallucinations, sensory crossover and nausea. In addition, if a user mistakenly selects poisonous mushrooms when looking for naturally growing mushrooms, they can cause death or permanent liver damage within hours of ingestion. Psilocybin can also be produced synthetically.
