The peyote plant is a cactus whose principal active ingredient is a hallucinogen known as mescaline. The top of the plant consists of round "buttons" that are cut from the roots, dried and chewed to achieve a hallucinogenic effect. In addition, mescaline can be extracted from peyote or produced synthetically.
